Character design - process

This is how I usually come up with character designs. This one was before starting with those little black-white shapes of the character, but it was one of the factors leading me to the idea. Once I have some different designs down, I pick the stuff I like most of each design and try to re-arrange them.
To keep an overview of the designs I usually draw a model-figure digitally which I then print out several times in low opacity, so that I have more control over the designs and can put them next to each other and compare them more easily.
The final design is drawn digitally though.

The character is a gender-neutral personification of love, although I used a japanese portrayal to get away from the usual cupid-like designs.
To be honest, their face is designed a bit more manly, because their original clothes were rather feminine, so I wanted to balance it, but since their clothes changed a lot, they may seem a bit more manly than I would've liked.

Thank you for your visit!

A small animation I did before even having planned out their design
It was a challenge, but fun nevertheless, although it was my first time
